Word to graduates: don’t forget your roots

Looking around in the crowd at Saturday’s Chase County Schools commencement, there were a few tears. It’s an emotional time, especially for parents, but one that’s exciting and full of hope for the graduates and their families.
    Even though our youngest is 10 years out of high school already, it’s easy to recall the feelings as we watched him cross the stage and accept his diploma. Things haven’t changed much a decade later, as those same looks of anticipation, joy and even some sadness could be seen in the faces of parents of the Class of 2017.
    It’s a common thread among some youths in every high school graduating class—how they can’t wait to get out of this town. That independence is good, and is a credit to your parents for instilling a desire to explore the world and, hopefully, continue your education. There’s nothing wrong with looking forward to living in a new place and experiencing life.
    But, it’s also a good thing to remember where your roots are, to cherish the memories you will take with you in this next step in your lives. Remember the values of service, concern for one another and responsibility that you were taught here. Remember how much this community cares about you.
