Girls run away with SPVA, DC Stratton titles

    The Lady Longhorns’ regular season came to an end last week, and Chase County proved once again they are hard to beat.
    At the rescheduled SPVA Conference meet May 2 and Friday’s twilight meet hosted by Dundy Co. Stratton, Chase County went out with a bang.
    They won the coveted SPVA title by a 147-point margin, and won by even a bigger gap—157.5 points—in Benkelman Friday with nine other teams on the track.
    It was the fourth straight SPVA title for the girls, after finishing second in 2013 and tying with No. Platte St. Pat’s in 2012.
    Three new SPVA records and a school record were set by Chase County at the conference meet in Hershey, along with a host of other season and personal best performances.
    A 13-year-old Chase County school record fell when freshman Mallie McNair won the 800 at 2:20.86.
    However, she ran even faster in Benkelman three days later, where she cut off another second and a half to break it again.
    She took down the long-standing 800 meter school record held by Michelle (Dill) May.
    Also setting new SPVA records were Chase County’s 400 and 3200 meter relay teams.
    The 400 meter team of Taylor Williams,
Taylin McNair, Katelyn Wheeler and Adelaide Maxwell set a new conference meet record with a 50.7 finish at last week’s meet.
    That broke the record held by the same four girls set last year at 51.1.
    In the 3200 meter relay, the Lady Longhorn team of Mallie McNair, Taylin McNair, Destiny Reinke and Kadyn Milner also set a new conference record with a 9:59.7 time.
    That broke a two-year-old Chase County SPVA record that included three of the same team members. The 2015 team which also included Paige Spady ran it in 10:05.0.
    Coach Hauxwell said the entire team did some great things at the rescheduled meet that still had rain and cooler temperatures.
    Chase County took first in 12 of the 17 events, and won the top three individual spots in the 200 and 800.
    In the 200, Taylin McNair, Katelyn Wheeler and Adelaide Maxwell went one, two and three.
    Besides Mallie McNair’s first in the 800, Destiny Reinke crossed in second and Kadyn Milner, third. Hauxwell said Reinke set the pace and helped push McNair to the win.
