Seven firsts lift CCS boys to home meet championship

Seven first place finishes at the Chase County Invitational helped push the Longhorns to another meet championship.
The April 18 home meet arrived with nearly perfect weather, which aided a lot of very good performances.
The Longhorns captured gold medals in the distance races, jumps, throws and relays, but also collected important points from other team members in the top eight final standings.
Like the state meet, Chase County officials score eight places for team totals.
Coach Carl Zuege said distance runner Will Kuenne continues to look very strong in the 1600 and 3200.
“He’s been pretty dominant in those two events and looking strong,” Zuege said.
He said the CCS junior is building up to a nice finish with districts just two weeks away, where he has one of the top times at this point in the season.
Likewise, senior Cody Williams took first in a pair of events, the high jump and long jump, despite an Achilles tendon strain he suffered at Sutherland a few days earlier.
He was pulled from the hurdles and triple jump last week as he recovers.
Chase County’s throwers again combined for a lot of scoring, 45 points at the home meet, in the shot and discus.
Dakota Wallin, Jack Bauerle and Hunter Bartels went one, two, three in the discus, while Bartels, Wallin and Bauerle finished first, third and fourth in the shot.
“They once again performed tremendously,” Zuege said.
Chase County’s 3200 meter relay team of Scott Wheeler, Tagan Mays, Juan Venegas and Caleb Weiss combined for the championship in that event, winning by a wide margin.
Although it wasn’t scored in team standings, Chase County also won the weightman’s relay on the efforts of Wallin, Bauerle, Bartels and Eli Hinojosa.
