Western Plains Longbeards planning kids day at Enders

    Chase County’s National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) chapter, the Western Plains Longbeards, is hosting Kids Day at Enders Lake May 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    There will be many activities the entire family can enjoy such as kayaking, family games with door prizes and free park admission and fishing.
    Ayla Rector, the chapter president, hopes this will become an annual event. There is a banquet held at the beginning of the year, but the chapter hopes to plan a women’s event and a men’s event in the future, said Rector.
    Kids Day is being planned by a committee of three, Beau Licking, Frank Smith and Rector.
    There will also be a lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs being served for $7.50. There is no need for prior registration.
    The NWTF was founded in 1973 when there were about 1.5 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of science-based conservation, hunters’ rights, dedicated volunteers, committed partners and professional staff there are now almost 7 million turkeys.
    The NWTF has made an investment of $488 million in wildlife conservation and the preservation of North America’s hunting heritage.
    They have improved more than 17 million acres of wildlife habitat and introduce 100,000 people to the outdoors each year.
    For every dollar raised at Kids Event, 90 cents will go back into re-introducing turkeys into different areas, organizing wounded warrior, veterans and Large Jake (15-17 year old boys) hunting events. The rest will go to the Western Plains Longbeards chapter funds.
