Longhorns edge Ogallala by two points to win Perkins Co. meet
While the initial tallying put Ogallala at the top in team points at the Perkins Co. track meet in Grant, a refiguring gave the title to Chase County.
By a slim two-point margin, the Longhorns bested a field of seven other teams on Saturday.
Chase Co. Coach Carl Zuege said the team scoring listed on athletic.net combined both varsity and JV scores into one varsity team score. When the 12 points Ogallala JV athletes were removed, it gave Chase County the varsity win by two points.
Zuege said the Longhorns had a big lead before the finals, but knew Ogallala had some good sprinters and middle distance runners.
“So, for us in the afternoon, it was a matter of tacking on points here and there,” he said.
Chase County picked up afternoon points in both hurdle events, won the 1600, scored in the sprints and in two relays, among other good performances.
“We did enough to hold on and win another meet,” Zuege said.
Last Saturday’s second major meet win for Chase County came after a championship at the Ogallala Invitational the week before.
Senior Cody Williams was a big part of amassing points for the Longhorns, and was selected the meet’s E. Lee Todd Most Outstanding Male Athlete.
While he didn’t compete in the high jump, where he cleared 6’8” on the same track two weeks earlier, he did win both the long and triple jumps, and captured silver in the high hurdles and bronze in the 300 meter hurdles.
In all, Williams tallied 34 points for the team.
“With Cody, he’s got five or six events he can do at a pretty high level,” Zuege said.
With plans to be a decathlete in college, he’s trying to get some experience in a variety of events while keeping his legs fresh, the coach added.
Will Kuenne was a double gold medal winner, as well, winning both the 1600 and 3200 events, despite some humidity that affected distance times across the board.
Chase County’s throwers had another good day, placing three in both the shot and discus. Dakota Wallin took gold in the discus, while teammates Eli Hinojosa and Jack Bauerle also placed in both, scoring important points.
