Ogallala win first big test for Lady Longhorns
A 72-point margin of victory at the Ogallala Invite last week pointedly stated the Lady Longhorns are back.
It was the first major meet of the season for Chase County, and featured several strong track teams, including district rival Mitchell, who earned runner-up honors.
Last week, Chase County tallied 50 more points than their win at Ogallala last season, and last week’s championship came on six first place finishes, three of those from Chase County’s relay teams.
While Coach Troy Hauxwell said they left some points on the track and in the pits, he had many more positives to talk about from last Thursday’s meet.
It was originally set for Saturday, but having concerns with forecasted rain, Ogallala meet officials moved it two days earlier.
Hauxwell said he appreciated the determination shown by his team in the meet.
One was sophomore Allison Owings. After she scratched in two prelim shot put throws and missed making finals, Owings came back later to win the discus with a personal best throw of 119’2.5”. A discus throw of 118’1” medaled at state last year, Hauxwell said.
“That’s very encouraging, especially as she continues to improve,” he said.
Another meet highlight was freshman Mallie McNair’s gold in the 400, beating runner-up Mitchell’s Jori Peters, who finished fourth at state last year. Sister Taylin McNair was third.
“That’s a big encouragement there, too,” he said.
