Mid-Plains increasing tuition rates next year

It’s going to cost students an extra $5 per credit hour to take “for credit” classes through Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) next year.
Last Wednesday, the MPCC Board of Governors approved a 5.05 percent increase in resident tuition—raising the per credit hour rate from $84 to $89.
Fees will stay the same at $15 per credit hour. The total per credit hour tuition and fees will go from $99 to $104. Changes will affect the 2017-18 academic year.
Preliminary figures show MPCC will continue to rank in the middle when compared to what other community colleges in Nebraska may charge for tuition and fees. The estimated average is $104.88 per credit hour.
MPCC offers in-state tuition to students residing in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota.
Students not eligible for in-state tuition will see a similar rate increase. Fees will stay capped at $15 per credit hour, but tuition will bump up from $109 per credit hour to $116 per credit hour for the 2017-18 school year.
The board also approved new room and board rates for 2017-18. In both McCook and North Platte, total room and board rates will increase by $50 per semester, regardless of the meal plan.
“Knowing state aid is not going to go up, but most likely going to go down, our options for preparing our 2017-18 budget are a combination of tuition increases, property taxes increases, expenditure reductions and the use of reserves,” MPCC President Ryan Purdy.
“We felt that tuition needed to go up a little higher for the 2017-18 fiscal year to close the budget gap,” he said.
