CCS seeking third party to run lunch program

Chase County Schools could be joining a growing number of schools who hire an outside company to run their lunch programs.
Next week, the school will hold a pre-proposal conference with companies who may be interested in operating the school’s lunch program.
Superintendent Joel Lefdal reported to the board during their regular meeting Feb. 14 that the school will be seeking proposals from outside companies.
Lefdal said this week that several area schools, including McCook and Ogallala, already use an outside company. He added that North Platte and Hershey also contract out their lunch programs.
Lefdal said staffing represents a big issue for a school running its own program, not to mention the cost of operation.
He said outside companies have better buying power than individual schools. In addition, they are staffed to handle absences, etc.
Lefdal told the board the state was surprised by the low numbers using the lunch program.
