Ordinance change allows pet crematories in three districts

    Despite a fairly short meeting Monday, the city council completed several pieces of business.
    One included approval of an ordinance that adds crematories for small animals in three specific zoning districts, but only after a conditional use permit is approved.
    Dave Johnsen, DVM, co-owner of Veterinary Services, said deceased animals are now taken to either Grant or Ogallala, but they would like to offer the service  here.
    “We see it as a service to pet owners,” he said.
    Pictures of crematories were shown, and if built, Johnsen said it would be fenced.
    Building Inspector/Zoning Officer Nick Schultz noted that a conditional use permit would have to be issued first before a crematory would be allowed, and only in agricultural (A-1), highway business (C-1) or light industrial (I-1) districts.
    In the zoning regs, crematories had not been listed as structures allowed.
    Part of the approved ordinance also cleans up some language regarding sight triangles. A sight triangle is that area at a street intersection in which nothing shall be erected. The intent is not to impede the vision of drivers.
    The additions/changes were approved on a 4-0 vote after a public hearing.
