LB 693 would ban ‘spoofing’

Sen. Steve Halloran sponsored LB 693 in the Nebraska Legislature which would prevent telemarketers from changing caller ID information.
Testimony was presented to the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee on Feb. 19.
When telemarketers knowingly manipulate caller ID information it’s known as “spoofing.”
A phone call can appear with a phone number that closely matches the phone number being called.
Sen. Halloran put an amendment on the bill prohibiting anyone working with a telecommunications service or internet-enabled voice service from “causing a caller ID service to knowingly provide misleading or inaccurate information with the intent to defraud, harm or wrongfully obtain anything of value.”
