Youths can win lifetime fishing permits

    Two lucky young fishermen will win lifetime fishing permits Saturday at the annual Ron Berry Memorial Kids Fishing Day at Champion Lake.
    Sponsored by the Southwest Nebraska chapter of the Izaak Walton League, the event is for youths age 8 to 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    Not only will youths get some free fishing education, Ike’s will also provide a free lunch and other prizes. Some poles and tackle will be provided by Ike’s, but youths can bring their own for fishing that morning.
    The big prizes are the two lifetime fishing permits, made possible with a donation from the Logan Bauman Memorial Foundation, said Tom Elder, Ike’s secretary/treasurer.
    Winners will be drawn from the registrations taken that morning, Elder said, and winners must be Nebraska residents to be eligible.
    Winners must also be present for the drawing after lunch, he said.
    The annual Kids Fishing Day has been named in memory of longtime Ike’s member Ron Berry for several years. Elder said Berry was Ike’s president when he died, and was a member when the fishing day was started.
    “He loved to fish and putting on this event for the kids was something he looked forward to every year,” Elder said.
