Workers hard to find for fair trash pickup

City employees working after regular hours will earn double pay

No one wants to work extra hours on the job, especially during Chase County Fair week.
City of Imperial officials have been dealing with that issue concerning trash pickup at the fairgrounds this week, according to discussion at the Aug. 1 council meeting.
In the end, council members voted to pay city employees double their regular pay for hours they have to work beyond normal.
The “extra” overtime pay will be for work time after 11:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday (if needed on Sunday), based on the motion that passed 3-0.
Council member Chad Yaw, who met with Fair Board President Ryan Stromberger to hammer out details, said fair board members are gathering their own crew to get the individual trash cans dumped into the large dumpsters.
City employees will only be collecting trash from the large dumpsters, then take those truck loads to the transfer station.
There are 20-25 large dumpsters throughout the grounds, and it’s expected crews will possibly need to make four to five trips to the transfer station Thursday, Friday and Saturday, said Public Works Supt. Pat Davison.
At least one employee was available for the overtime work, Davison said.
Employees will receive regular pay for trash pickup on the grounds during their normal work hours this week.
