Wauneta team takes top honors at Smokin’ on the Lake contest

Team Curl from Wauneta earned the top prize at this year’s Smokin’ on the Lake BBQ contest held as part of the Enders Outdoor Extravaganza.
Luke Curl and his team topped the other 11 competitors in this year’s 3rd annual event held June 10 at Enders Lake Recreation Area.
Team Curl won two of the four divisions outright, and tied for first in another to tally the points for Grand Champion and the $500 prize.
There was a tie for Reserve Champion between RJ’s BBQ and Squeelers. They split the $250 prize money.
Wheeler Ranch of Wauneta sponsors the Smokin’ on the Lake event, said ELRA Supt. Beau Licking.
Here are the top three winners in each of the four divisions:
Pork ribs—1st Team Curl, 2nd Canyon Cooks, 3rd RJ’s BBQ.
    Pork loin—1st Team Curl, 2nd (tie) Squeelers and CC Barbeque, 3rd Pit’s N Spit’s.
    Pork butt—1st Squeelers, 2nd Pit’s N Spit’s, 3rd RJ’s BBQ.
    Side dish—1st (tie) Team Curl and Smoke N Spice, 2nd Pit’s N Spit’s, 3rd RJ’s BBQ.
Before the winners were announced, people lined up to taste-test the meat prepared by the teams.
The BBQ contest was just one of a day full of events at Enders, capped off with a pair of concerts.
Plans are already underway for next year’s Extravaganza on June 8, 2024 when 50 years of Game & Parks hunter education will also be celebrated.
