This tipped trailer loaded with hay blocked the west-bound lane of Highway 6 last Thursday for a couple of hours after the driver failed to negotiate the turn properly off of Avenue 321.

Tipped trailer of hay closes part of highway

A partially overturned trailer hauling hay blocked a portion of Highway 6 west of Imperial last Thursday, closing the west-bound lane of traffic for a little over two hours.
The Chase County Sheriff’s Office was notified at noon on June 1 of the truck turned over at Highway 6 and 321 Avenue, about 11 miles west of Imperial and blocking the westbound lane.
Sheriff Kevin Mueller said the 2007 Volvo semi, driven by Nico Strydom, 52, of Grant was  turning west off the county road and did not negotiate the turn properly. That caused the rear tires of the trailer to drop into the ditch, tipping the trailer  onto the passenger side.
Mueller said the trailer was fully loaded with square hay bales. The owner of the truck and trailer arrived later with a hired hand in a pay loader and they were able to cut the straps and tip the trailer back over.
There was minimal damage to the truck and trailer, Mueller said, along with some damage to the stop sign at the intersection.
The Imperial Volunteer Fire Department and Imperial EMS assisted at the scene.
