Recycling center guidelines reviewed as long-time service continues

The recycling program in Imperial has been a service available to the entire county for nearly 40 years.
The recycling program originally was started by the city of Imperial with a drop-off site  that began in the former K-4 school building on Broadway (now torn down). Trailers were also used for collection, then it was moved to the transfer station after it was built, recalled City Clerk/Administrator Jo Leyland.
The recycling operation later became a part of the county’s solid waste management plan through the interlocal agreement between the city and county. The village of Wauneta withdrew from the interlocal agreement a few years ago, but as county residents, they continue to have access to the recycling program, Leyland said.
The program has seen a lot of changes over the decades, she added, but continues to operate for the use of all residents in the city and county.
The recycling building, now housed just west of the Harchelroad Motors dealership along Highway 6 in Imperial at 120 Cape Street, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the convenience of the public, Leyland said.
While the majority of users follow the guidelines, city workers continue to see violations on what items are supposed to be dropped off there.
“Citizens are asked to use the honor system when bringing their recyclable materials to aid in the processing and marketing of the materials,” Leyland said.
A walk-in door on the east side of the building enables access to separate, labeled bins and containers for each of the items that are accepted for recycling.
