No contest pleas entered in two district court cases

Two defendants in separate cases entered no contest pleas in Chase County District Court Oct. 25.
In the first case heard by District Judge Patrick Heng, Teodoro Osorio Avalos, 40, pled no contest to a Class 1 misdemeanor charge of 3rd Degree Assault and a Class 4 felony of attempted terroristic threat.
Charges resulted from a domestic disturbance that occurred June 11, 2023 at the Capital Trailer Park.
Avalos was represented by Leslie Nordhausen, acting as public defender.
She said probation was warranted based on circumstances of Avalos’ compliance of no contact with the victim, two children in Mexico to support and his remorse for his actions.
Avalos waived a pre-sentence investigation, allowing Judge Heng to sentence him during the hearing. He granted Avalos 18 months probation on both counts and directed him to report to the District 11 probation office the following day.
In the second case, Tevin Thompson, 31, of Columbia, Missouri faced a Class 4 felony of attempted terroristic threat, Class 1 misdemeanor of operating a vehicle to avoid arrest and willful reckless driving, a Class 3 misdemeanor. Another charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement.
On March 3, 2023, Thompson was pursued by Holyoke, Colorado police and proceeded east into Nebraska, where a Chase County Sheriff’s Deputy picked up the high-speed pursuit with speeds up to 120 mph.
He continued through Imperial on 12th Street and later became stuck in a snow bank off a county road east of Imperial. Thompson took off on foot in a nearby pasture and eluded officers.
Early the next morning, he showed up at a rural home, seeking a ride, noting he had wrecked his car. The party told him to call 911. They followed up with the 911 dispatch center to see if he had called, which he had not. The party was advised of the search and they confirmed it was the suspect at their home.
Later, Thompson entered the home and pulled a knife on one of the subjects. Another subject in the home aimed a shotgun at the suspect and he ran from the home.
Deputies began searching the immediate area and hunters advised they had seen Thompson along a county road. Sheriff Kevin Mueller and Deputy Mike Dukes took Thompson into custody after he drew a knife on them.
At the hearing, Thompson, also represented by Nordhausen, pled no contest and also waived a pre-sentence investigation.
Judge Heng sentenced Thompson to 364 days in the county jail. He has already served 237 days in jail. With good time, Judge Heng discharged Thompson for time already served.
Judge Heng noted Thompson also has outstanding warrants in both Colorado and Missouri. He remained in custody to allow Colorado or Missouri authorities to exercise their warrants.
County Attorney Joel Burke told the judge the party involved was satisfied with the plea agreement and chose not to appear.
