Medical student at hospital, clinics puts high importance on patients’ mental health

Chase County Community Hospital (CCCH) and clinics welcomes another University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) student who will spend the next six weeks completing family medicine on-site training .
Alexandra Fiedler is a native of Lincoln and a third year medical student at UNMC.
Fiedler said she made the decision to go into a career in  medicine while still in grade school.
“My focus, at first, was psychiatry, even at that age,” she said.
Mental health has always been an area of interest for her, Fiedler said.
Since entering medical school her interests have expanded, and she is now leaning toward internal medicine or ENT (ear, nose and throat).
“You can bring the mental health aspect into whatever you do. It’s what you make of it,” said Fiedler.
What’s important is helping people and caring for the patient, she said.
She said she is undecided as to where she would like to practice medicine—whether it be in a largely populated area or rural location.
“I am finding the differences in medical care between rural and city fascinating,” Fiedler said.
