Government shutdown could stress food pantries

    With the government shutdown, the DHHS decided to pause the Supplemental Nutrition Assisstance Program, (SNAP), until the government is up and running again. The DHHS states that they have plans in place to restart the program quickly once the government shutdown comes to an end.
    Families with EBT cards can still use the remaining balance on the cards, there just won’t be anything added to them until the shutdown ends.
    Nebraskans needing help amid the shutdown can contact the United Way of the Midlands at there 211 Hotline for help.
    Chase County has two food pantry’s located in Imperial, where families cango once a week to receive food.
    The Chase County Food Pantry is located in the City Gym at 740 Court Street. With the new construction blocking the South entrance, the pantry can only be accessed through the city office entry on the west side of the building.
    During the construction, the pantry will only be open on Tuesday’s from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
    Crossroads Wesleyan Food Pantry is partnered with Food Bank of the Heartland, who delivers food to the pantry once a month. The pantry is located at 220 West 17th Street, in the Crossroads Wesleyan Church.
    This food pantry is open on Thursday’s from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. for food distibution to Chase County and surrounding areas. They provide a variety of food items for individuals and families. No appointments are neccessary.
    Masks are encouraged, but not required. The pantry also accepts donations and welcomes any volunteer help.
    With the Holidays fast approaching, please find it in your heart to donate to the pantry’s if possible so the people in need in the area don’t go hungry.
