General Election less than 8 weeks away

Now that Labor Day is behind us, many turn their thoughts to the November General Election.
With the Nov. 8 election less than eight weeks away, the public might want to become aware of some upcoming dates and deadlines so they can be eligible to vote.
There is a lot of interest in local races this year—ones for Imperial mayor and city council, Chase County Schools and Wauneta-Palisade boards of education and an Upper Republican NRD at-large board seat. Wauneta and Lamar also have village seats open.
While all of the county officials’ seats are up for election this year, Chase County made its decision at the Primary on the three races with more than one person running. All of the candidates on the county tickets filed as Republicans, and since only one from each party can advance, voters will see only one name on the November ballot for the county offices.
On the state level, voters will be choosing a new Governor, along with all other state officers such as Attorney General, Treasurer, Secretary of State and Auditor.
On the national scene, a Third District congressional representative will be elected to a two-year term.
County Clerk/Election Commissioner Debbie Clark will be watching for a notice from the State Secretary of State’s Office this Friday, when he is to certify candidates, offices and any issues, such as petitions, that will be on the Chase County ballot.
There will be a number of issues on the ballot after successful petition drives.
Clark said next week’s Imperial Republican will include the full list of candidates that will be on the November ballot.
Early voting
Voters in Chase County can start voting early in the county clerk’s office on Tuesday, Oct. 11, Clark said, which is a full four weeks ahead of the General Election.
Clark said her office is supposed to receive the ballots by Oct. 3.
As they can all year long, Chase County residents should check their voter registration status, especially if they’ve had some life changes since they voted last, Clark said.
To vote in the Nov. 8 election, the last day to make changes or to register for the first time is Friday, Oct. 28, when Clark’s office will be open until 6 p.m.
Clark said voters must come into her office to register, or make changes such as a new address or name change due to marriage. It’s also necessary to contact the office if a voter wants to change party affiliation, she said.
The breakdown of current registered voters in Chase County is:
