Four county, two city officials not seeking another term after 2022

    Six elected county and city officials up for re-election this year have chosen not to run, as the incumbent filing deadline came and went Tuesday.
    While there is news of other candidates filing for re-election, the big news is those who did not.
    For the county, Chase County residents will see a new assessor, clerk, treasurer and commissioner next year.
    Assessor Dotty Bartels, Clerk Debra Clark, Treasurer Cynthia Schoenberger and Commissioner Dennis Kunnemann did not file by the deadline.
    Three new candidates filed the past week for county office.
    Sid Bartels and Tori Otzel filed for County Assessor, while Wendy Moe filed for County Clerk.
    For the city of Imperial, incumbent Mayor Dwight Coleman and Charlesa Kline, a city council member, did not file.
    However, several other incumbents put their names on the line for re-election in the past few days.
    Chad Yaw, an incumbent Imperial city council member, filed on Monday.
    With recent filings from Jeff Olsen and Cindy Arterburn, all four CCS school board incumbents are seeking re-election. Others filing earlier were Steve Wallin and Dan Reeves.
    That’s the same for the Wauneta-Palisade board of education. Incumbent Allison Sandman was joined by fellow incumbents Marty Wheeler and Laurie Maris, the latter two filing the past week.
    The two current Imperial Airport Authority members—Doug Wilson and Nolan Spady—also filed in the waning days for incumbents.
    Five Upper Republican NRD board incumbents filed with the Secretary of State by Tuesday’s deadline. In addition to Brock Stromberger and Dean Large who filed earlier, incumbents Jason Kunkel of Lamar, Tyler Turner of Grant and Terry Martin of Benkelman filed the past week.
    Jay Lee of Madrid, incumbent for the NRD’s Sub. #10, did not file for re-election.
    Other candidates who do not fill an elected position now have until March 1 to put their names on the line.
State positions
    Ed Dunn of Grant, the current city manager there, remains the only candidate for the 44th District state senator seat to be vacated by Dan Hughes of Venango.
    However, there may be some activity for that position in the days left when other candidates can file.
    Likewise, Third District Congressman Adrian Smith has no competition yet for his House seat.
    It’s a crowded field to replace Gov. Pete Ricketts, who is term-limited and cannot run again this year. As of late Tuesday, six Republicans, one Democrat and a Libertarian are seeking the Governor’s seat.
    Nebraska will have a new Attorney General next year. Incumbent Doug Peterson did not file for re-election. He announced late last year he would not seek a third term.
