Driver Chad Cochran (3) of Imperial and McCook’s Larry Steinbeck (66) mix it up in the second heat of the limited weld division of this year’s demo derby.

Demo derby wrapped up fair events

This year’s Chase County Fair and Expo closed out eight days of events with the 32nd annual Jaycees Demo Derby Sunday, Aug. 15.
This year’s derby featured two main events—one for the limited weld division and one for the old school division.
Six cars were entered in the limited weld division and nine in the old school division.
The main event for each divison was run first, with a second heat for any of the drivers who wanted to bring their car back.
In the limited weld main event, Larry Steinbeck of McCook took first. Five cars came back for the second heat with Steinbeck winning that as well.
In the old school division, Joel Hutchinson of McCook claimed the top prize money in the main event.
Dustin Payton of McCook took first in the second heat with a total of five coming back for that heat.
Denis Vandike of Benkelman, competing in the limited weld division,  claimed the “maddog” prize money for the day.
With the renovations made to the ALLO Arena this year, the fairboard did not want the dirt base disturbed.
Rather than moving arena dirt into a berm for the boundaries, large cement barriers were used instead.
Complete results of both divisions are as follows:
