Champion is hosting BBQ Smokeoff June 3

The Midwest BBQ Association is having its annual Smokeoff at the Community Center in Champion on Saturday, June 3.
Cindy Fischer of Wauneta, the event organizer, said there are 17 cook-off participants signed up so far for the competition.
The competitors are coming from as far away as Omaha, she said. The four BBQ categories are beef ribs, rib pork, brisket and chicken legs and thighs.
There will be $5,000 awarded in prizes to the winners.  The prizes will be broken down into the five top places of the four categories at $1,250 each.
The competitors will begin their smoking the night before, June 2, continuing through the day Saturday, with the judging on Saturday afternoon, Fischer said.
There will then be a community feed at 6 p.m. with a charge of $10 per plate for adults and $5 per plate for children.
A vendor craft fair is also part of the activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a city wide garage sale is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, she said.
During the day there will be food trucks from Sprocket Dogs and Latte Da’, she said.
