Campers feel adventurous at SCORE camp 2022

Kim Spady described the 325 kids as energetic and receptive as SCORE Camp took place at Champion Lake, Swinging Bridge and Chase County Schools.
SCORE camp ran from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., but at 7:45 a.m. campers met their teams, which were organized by colors.
There was over 300 volunteers, 80 which of were high school students getting community service hours.
“The community is extremely devoted to extending their help and we could not make it work without them,” Spady said.
The weather Monday and Friday was hot, but luckily there were no storms. They had to take advantage of the trees on Friday and relocate under them, Spady said.
The public was welcome to visit on Wednesday to see what the students were learning.
There were many presenters during Wednesday at the school.
All the kids started off with Aaron Hutchings and Matthew Sargeant. Their presentation was called “The Survival University.”
In the auxiliary gym, The Exploration Place was taking place. There were several stations where kids participated in including coding robots and sling shotting balls into circular targets.
The Wacky Science Show was held in the auditorium. Tim Mannix showed how science works in different ways. The kids had their mouths open in shock and always laughed at his jokes.
Wildlife Encounters was held in the wrestling room. Barb Whittamore showed the kids a kangaroo joey, red footed tortoise, an alligator and an African grey parrot.
In the Longhorn gym, Sargeant was doing Water Navigation and Hutchings was in the Shorthorn gym doing Land Navigation.
The last activity of the day was called “Survival Challenge.” The kids received materials to build a boat that will float on water.
Adventure Night on Wednesday at Champion Lake was attended by over 200 people. Families enjoyed a night out and kids demostrated what they learned at SCORE camp.
Hot dogs, chips and s’mores were cooked by the fire. The food was sponsored by Dave Oxford with Western Select Genetics.
The activites at Adventure Night included Wildlife Encounter, petting animals that Sinclair of Champion brought in and multiple survival excercises.
SCORE camp had over 40 presenters and many of them were local.
“The presenters were very positive about the campers and their desire to learn more,” Spady said.
The next SCORE camp will be in 2024.
“We are looking forward to more score in ‘24,” Spady said.
