WP splits matches

    The week was a mixture of extremes for the Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team.
    The Broncos traveled to Dundy County Stratton Sept. 27.
    WP let the Tigers (0-21) hang around in the first set, only winning 25-21.
    The Broncos found their groove in the second set. Serving runs by Chloe Stehno, Peyton Cox and Halle Bardsley gave WP a 25-12 win.
    Led by the serving of Bardsley and McKenna Doetker, the Broncos won the third set 25-9.
    WP hosted Wallace (18-3)for homecoming Friday. The Wildcats are ranked 10th in Class D2 with two of their three losses coming to Class D1 numbers one and two Cambridge and Maywood/Hayes Center.
    The Broncos gave up a 1-7 run in the first set and dropped the game 14-25.
    Set two turned into a dog fight. WP held a one-point lead, 11-10, before the Wildcats rattled off seven straight points to take the lead. The Broncos responded to pull to within 16-17, but once more Wallace went on a run to leave WP trailing 16-23. Wauneta-Palisade scored three points and had to hold off one set point. With GraCee Goings serving, the Broncos came back to take a 25-24 lead.  WP fought off two more set points before taking the 28-26 win.
    The Broncos took a 12-9 lead in the third set, but Wallace responded. WP led 16-15 before dropping the set 20-25.
    Wauneta-Palisade fell behind 8-13, but didn’t let Wallace hold serve as the match neared its end. With their backs to the wall and facing match point, Bardsley served five consecutive points, including three aces, to pull the Broncos to within two, 22-24. With a final sideout, WP lost the set 22-25.
Up next
    WP was in Oshkosh Tuesday for a triangular with the Eagles (13-7) and Perkins County (7-13).
    Friday will be a football/volleyball double header at Arthur County (9-11).
    Next Tuesday WP will host Medicine Valley (11-5).
    The RPAC tournament will begin Oct. 13 and WP’s final regular season game will be at home against Brady (6-12) Oct. 21.
