WP girls come from behind for first win of the season

The Wauneta-Palisade girls basketball team split its first two games of the season last week.
The Broncos won their first game in dramatic fashion Thursday.
As Head Coach Matt Cox put it, “We dug ourselves a huge hole to start the game.”
Cox credited Wallace with creating chaos and causing too many WP turnovers.
The Broncos trailed by as many as eight points early in the game, but pulled to within four points, 13-17, at the end of the first quarter.
Unable to cut into the lead any more, WP trailed 24-29 at halftime.
After too many quick shots early on, according to Cox, the Broncos settled into their offense as the game went on.
The Broncos nibbled away at their deficit in the third quarter, cutting the gap to 33-36 entering the final quarter.
Behind its best offensive quarter of the game, WP tied the game at 42-42 midway through the fourth quarter.  The Broncos outscored Wallace 7-4 down the stretch for the win.
Peyton Cox led WP with 15 points. GraCee Goings was hot on her heels with 12 points and McKenna Doetker added nine points.
Izzy Stehno was the Broncos top rebounder with nine. Goings and Doetker each had seven rebounds.
One night later, WP lost 34-39 at Cambridge.
The Broncos got off to a much better start at Cambridge, Cox said.
“Our offense was fluid, it looked like we knew what we were doing,” he continued.
WP led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter and took a 19-15 lead into halftime.
But the long, tall Trojans kept the Broncos off balance, Cox said.
After only scoring four points in the second quarter, WP was held to single digits in the third and fourth quarters, as well, while Cambridge picked up steam. The Broncos were outscored 15-24.
Goings led WP with 14 points.
Cox had a double-double, 11 points and 14 rebounds, to help her reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.
“I loved our defense,” Cox said, adding, his Broncos checked out well.
“It gave us some chances in the last couple minutes, we just missed some really good looks at the basket,” Cox finished.
