WP drops battle with Wallace

The Wauneta-Palisade football team got off to a great start against Wallace Friday evening, but the Broncos let the second half get away from them in a 14-56 loss.
The Broncos took it to Wallace on WP’s first drive, moving down the field with a combination of run and pass plays.
Kyle Jutten put WP on the board with a 19-yard touchdown run.
Wauneta-Palisade kept the Wildcats out of the end zone in the first quarter, but Wallace was first to score in the second.
The Broncos answered and expanded their lead with a 14-yard run by Jacksen Littrel.
The Wallace offense was tough to stop and the Wildcats added touchdowns of 30 and 76 yards before half time.
WP Co-Head Coach Rand Geier said the Broncos played well overall in the first half, but called the 76-yard touchdown run by all-state running back Carson Glunz a big momentum changer.
“We missed a scoring opporunity and they scored right at the end of the first half to make the score 22-14,” Geier said.
WP was very aggressive in the first half and became complacent in the second,” he added.
“Wallace was the more aggressive team,” Geier said.
The Wildcats put the hammer down in the third quarter, tacking on 20 more points in six plays after back-to-back turnovers by the Broncos early in the second half.
Wallace tacked on a touchdown at the end of the third quarter and another early in the fourth quarter to wrap up scoring.
Up next
Geier expects his team to step up in the weeks to come.
“We have good senior leadership and I’m positive they will respond this week,” he said.
The coming weeks will be important for the Broncos, now 3-2, starting with Arthur County Friday. The undefeated Wolves are second in the Class D6 point standings.
WP heads to Paxton, 1-4, next week. The Broncos are 15th in the point standings and also have a game against 3-2 Brady, 18th in the point standings and winners over Wallace 32-12 Sept. 22.
