WP can’t take down unbeaten Arthur County

The Wauneta-Palisade football team took its best shot at Arthur County last Friday, but came up on the short end of the stick against Class D6’s second ranked team.
WP Co-Head Coach Joseph Frecks said he and Co-Head Coach Randy Geier are very proud of the effort their team showed in this game.
“Arthur County is without a doubt one of the top teams in the state, and due to injury and sickness, we had some kids playing different roles and bigger roles than normal, but they stepped up and played very hard,” Frecks said.
Frecks gave credit to the Broncos’ offensive line for blocking very aggressively and the backs who ran hard against a very athletic defense.
“Turnovers were a struggle that we will be working to correct this week,” Frecks added.
The first touchdown of the game was a 62-yard run by Arthur County in the game’s first seconds.
WP’s only points of the game came in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from Aden Acton to Grayden Sutherland to cap a 11 play, 60-yard drive. WP ran the ball 10 straight times before the touchdown pass.
The Broncos lost the game 6-63.
WP finished with more rushing yards than the Wolves, 116-108, and did a good job limiting penalties, three for 31 yards.
Up next
WP heads to Paxton, 1-5, Friday, but Frecks said the Broncos expect a tough game.
Paxton has played one of the toughest schedules in the state.
Their opponents’ combined record is 25-10 to this point and they have played very tough in some of their losses, Frecks said.
“They are a much better team than their record shows.  They are athletic and very well coached. We will need to tackle well on defense and take care of the ball on offense in order to get a win this week,” he added.
Also remaining on the Broncos’ schedule is Brady, 3-3, a team that beat Wallace 32-12 Sept. 22.
WP is currently 15th in the Class D6 point standings. The top 16 teams make the playoffs.
