Laiden Lawler placed seventh in the 400-meter dash. Grayden Sutherland, left, also had a personal best.

WP’s Walker sets school record in 100

The Wauneta-Palisade track teams saw a little bit of everything last week, harsh wind and sprinkles Tuesday in Benkelman and a warm, relatively wind-free day Saturday in Cambridge.
Grant Walker took advantage of the nice day at the Don Stine Invite, winning the 100-meter dash and setting a new school record with a time of 11.02. The previous record of 11.24 was held by Jeremy Walgren and Cody Fanning.
WP Head Coach Dawn Doekter said it was very exciting to see.
Saturday showed the younger Broncos are setting into a nice routine, Doetker said.
Kyle Jutten finished second in pole vault.
Running without Walker, the boys’ 400-meter relay placed third. Team members were Jacksen Littrel, Jutten and Grayden Sutherland.
The girls’ team’s best performance was a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter relay. Running was Alexa Sandman, Peyton Cox, Ryleigh McCrumb and Brooke Knotts.
The weather at the Dundy County Stratton Invite caused organizers to nix the pole vault, high jump and 3,200-meter run.
Doetker said her team didn’t mind the changes on a day that wasn’t nice at all.     The Broncos had 10 athletes only compete for part of the day so they could head for the State FFA Convention.
Overall, Doetker said coaches thought that everyone handled the day the best they could, but some athletes are still battling some sore muscles.
WP’s girls team was made up of only freshmen and sophomores.
GraCee Goings won discus to lead the young group.
The boys’ team’s best finish was third place by Littrel with a PR in the discus.
WP will be back in Cambridge Thursday for the Medicine Valley Invite. First events are scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
Next week the Broncos will head to Trenton Wednesday for the Hitchcock County Invite.
