Gavin Wisnieski eyes his chip as it sails to the green at the SPVA Golf Championships in Grant.
Wisnieski leads CCS with second place at SPVA golf
The top of the leaderboard was jam packed at this year’s SPVA Golf Championships in Grant.
Last year’s Class D third place medalist Zaybreon Hansen of Perkins County ran away with the title, finishing with a final score of 73 on his home course.
But Chase County’s Gavin Wisnieski held off the rest of the field and claimed second place by one stroke over Ryker Copeland of Sutherland and Aiden George of Hershey.
Head Coach Marissa McDaniel said Wisnieski did an awesome job on the Pheasant Run course Thursday and she was excited to see him as SPVA runner-up.
CCS was at Grant April 18. Organizers made changes to the tee boxes between the Perkins County Invite and SPVA.
McDaniel said the back nine holes were longer and a little more difficult at SPVA, but Wisnieski still managed to beat his score by one stroke.
Longhorn golfer Matthew Murray held steady with his score, only increasing by one stroke, and Cole Pankonin also improved from the meet on the 18th in a huge way, according to McDaniel.
Pankonin was the Longhorns’ second place finisher with 94 at SPVA, a personal best for him and putting him in the meet’s top 15. Murray shot a 95. Kaden Vogt finished with a 105 and Jaret Manley, 110.
“Overall, I’m proud of what these boys are doing on the course. There’s been a lot of improvement and the way that these boys are supporting each other is absolutely amazing,” McDaniel said.

On Tuesday, Chase County JV was at Creek Valley.
The Longhorns will travel to Kimball Thursday, site of the May 15 C5 district. CCS had been scheduled to go to North Platte St. Pat’s invite.
“It makes sense to go there and play the course,” McDaniel said.
Next Tuesday, the Longhorns will split up with the varsity traveling to Bayard and the JV going to Sutherland.
