Two meets in three days put Broncos to the test

After a slow start to the season, the Wauneta-Palisade track teams are making up for lost time.
The Broncos battled bitter cold temperatures at the Dundy County Stratton Invite last Tuesday, then, as is typical for Nebraska weather, enjoyed a nice day for the Don Stine Invite in Cambridge.
Not only was the weather vastly different at each meet, so was the number of teams.
Perkins County, Sutherland, Arapahoe, Cambridge and Southwest were also in Benkelman.
The Cambridge meet, usually a good sized meet, grew as cancellations and postponements happened early in the week. With 13 girls teams and 14 boys teams, plus varsity and JV entries, several events were filled to the brim. The 100-meter dash had 50 boys and 40 girls run. In the shot put, 47 girls and 52 boys threw.
WP Head Coach Dawn Doetker said it was a very big meet, but she thought the Broncos did well.
“We’d like to see more JV meets combined with varsity. Yes, it’s long, but it’s nice to have all the athletes get to compete in their individual events,” she said.
Throwers led the way at both meets.
In the shot put, Peyton Cox won at Dundy County Stratton and Cambridge. GraCee Goings was third at DCS and fifth at Cambridge. Izzy Stehno placed sixth at DCS.
Eight of the Broncos nine shot putters and five of the eight discus throwers at Cambridge had PRs. Overall, WP had 13 personal bests at DCS and 22 at Cambridge.
Cox was sixth in the discus at DCS and Goings was third at Cambridge.
For the boys, Jacksen Littrel placed second in the shot put and fourth in the discus at DCS, then turned around and placed third in shot put and sixth in discus at Cambridge.
Doetker said her throwers had a very big day at Cambridge.
“There was great competition and they did very well,” Doetker said.
Ryleigh McCrumb placed second in the pole vault at DCS.
Thursday, Kyle Jutten placed first in high jump.
Up next
Another trip to Cambridge is on the Broncos’ schedule for this week.
WP will be back for the Medicine Valley Invite Friday.
Doetker said there’s some athletes still battling soreness, but hopefully some rest and they’ll will be ready to go for the week.
Next Wednesday will be the Hitchcock County Invite in Trenton.
