Two Broncos wrestlers finish second at RPAC

Senior Trey McCrumb and sophomore Konner McCrumb pace the Wauneta-Palisade wrestling team with second place finishes at Friday’s RPAC meet in Benkelman.
T. McCrumb picked up 150-lb. wins over Southern Valley’s Nate Grilli (11-11) and Cambridge’s Tye Stanton (12-2) after receiving a first round bye. T. McCrumb held a 15-8 advantage thanks in part to three nearfalls against Hitchcock County’s Karson Shuler before getting caught for a pin early in the third period.
Head Coach Shad Wiese said T. McCrumb has improved tremendously from years past.
“He has become a scrambler wrestler this season and is doing very well at that,” Wiese said, adding at times T. McCrumb looks like he’s in bad position but with his good hips he manages to almost always get into great position.
“Trey has become a kid with no wins as a freshman to a well rounded wrestler as a senior. He is fun to watch on the mat,” Wiese said.
K. McCrumb split matches in the three-man 113-pound pool.
After getting a second-period pin over Arapahoe’s Carter Blickenstaff (21-10) in the first match of the pool, K. McCrumb  trailed 8-12 before a late flurry by Alma’s Tucker Brandyberry (18-6) led to K. McCrumb’s pin with 10 seconds remaining in the match.
The win over Blickenstaff avenged an early season loss K. McCrumb suffered at Hi-Line.
Kameran McCrumb, 150 lbs., went 1-2 with a pin over Southern Valley’s Keaton Broeker.
Andrew Mackety, 126 lbs.; Jack Ward, 190 lbs.; and Draven Miner, 285 lbs., each went 0-2.
Up next
WP will take part in Thursday evenings Medicine Valley Duals in Curtis.
Wiese said he expects a strong showing from his team at the duals, although there may not be many matches.
The Broncos will return to Curtis Friday for the Medicine Valley Invite.
“The tournament is going to be tough but the guys have a good chance,” Wiese said.
WP did get beat up a little at RPAC, Wiese added, but should rebound well for the last couple weeks of season before districts. Miner, who medically forfeited his second RPAC match, will probably be out a couple weeks.
The final regular season meet will be at Southwest Feb. 2.
The D-4 District will be in Bayard Feb. 9-10.
