Two and through for WP in RPAC tourney

This year’s RPAC tournament was not a fun experience for the Wauneta-Palisade girls and boys basketball teams.
The Broncos traveled to Wallace Saturday for their first round games.
WP’s boys, the seventh seed, took on second-seeded Dundy County Stratton. The Broncos lost to DCS, ranked fourth in Class D1, 22-62.
WP’s girls lost to Hitchcock County 43-46. The Broncos scored five of their 11 first quarter points from the charity stripe and trailed 11-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Behind seven points from Emma Acton and five from Izzy Stehno, WP cut into the Falcons’ lead but still trailed 25-26 at halftime.
With no field goals in the third quarter, the Broncos only scored four points on 4-8 free throw shooting.
Trailing 29-39 to start the fourth quarter, WP only gave up one field goal to Hitchcock County in the fourth quarter. Cheyenne Parrish heated up for seven points in the fourth quarter, but the Broncos only managed one other field goal. Despite outscoring the Falcons  14-7 over the game’s final eight minutes, WP lost the contest 43-46.
Acton finished the night with a team-high 12 points. Peyton Cox scored 10 points.
WP made 17-30 free throws in the game while Hitchcock County made 12-25.
Stehno led the Broncos with nine rebounds. Cox and Parrish had eight and seven rebounds, respectively.
WP’s tournaments came to an end with losses Monday and Tuesday.
The Bronco girls traveled to Maxwell to take on Wallace Monday.
WP came out cold to start the game, only scoring two points in the first quarter.
Facing a 2-12 deficit to start the second quarter, the Broncos worked themselves back into the game behind seven points by Cox and six by Stehno. WP trailed by two points, 17-19, at halftime.
WP continued to nibble away at Wallace’s lead in the third quarter. Four players hit field goals for the Broncos, who cut the Wildcats’ lead to 26-27.
WP made 12 trips to the free throw line in the fourth quarter and converted seven, including Cox, who hit 5-6 on her way to 18 points on the night.
With two field goals giving the Broncos 11 points in the quarter, WP lost the game 37-40 and slipped to 5-9 on the season.
WP’s boys played Tuesday in Maxwell and lost to the hosts 31-65.
Pre-tourney trip to Paxton
Before the tournament began Saturday, the Broncos made the trip to Paxton.
The WP girls, who have had only one double-digit loss on the year and five losses of six points or less, dropped another close game, 47-51, to the Tigers.
GraCee Goings hit 5-10 three pointers and finished the night with 24 points. Cox led the Broncos with nine rebounds.
WP’s boys lost 38-75.
Up next
The Broncos’ next action will be Feb. 1 at home against Medicine Valley.
WP will travel to Sutherland Feb. 2.
