Luis Co brought home a fifth place finish from the state wrestling tournament. In this match against Mavrick Hagemann of Elkhorn Valley, Co works to turn Hagemann over.

Peterson wins championship, Reeves third, Co fifth

With seven wrestlers attending the state tournament from CCS, the Longhorns brought home three medals, including  a fifth place, third place and a State Champion.
Senior Jaret Peterson was able to avenge his loss last year in the finals against Cal Wells of Broken Bow. It took a double overtime tie-breaker to decide the title.
After a scoreless first period, Peterson started the second period on the bottom and was able to get an escape, scoring one point. No other points were scored in the second period.
Wells took the down position in the third period and also scored an escape point, tying the match at one apiece at the end of regulation.
That sent the match into a one-minute overtime period. Peterson was able to get a throw which landed Wells on his back but it was outside the circle so did not score any points. The period ended still tied at one.
That sent the match into the tie breaker rounds where each wrestler gets a chance to start in whatever position they choose in a 30-second period.
Peterson won the toss and chose to be down. It only took a few seconds and Peterson had a point for an escape, but that was all the scoring.
Wells took the down position for his choice which meant Peterson had to ride him out for 30 seconds or go into sudden victory round.
Wells tried with everything he had to get a reversal but Peterson was not letting go of the ankle, holding on so Wells didn’t score and giving Peterson the 2-1 victory and state title at 215 pounds.
In the 175 pound weight class, junior Thomas Reeves went 5-1, with his only loss coming to eventual champion Brek Thompson, 45-5, of Battle Creek, 2-5. Reeves got called for stalling early in the match, seemingly out of the blue, which gave Thompson a point and changed the way Reeves had to wrestle for the rest of the match so as not to lose more points for stalling.
Reeves came back in the consolation bracket with four more wins, finishing with an 8-4 decision win over Brice Chaplin of Broken Bow to take the third place medal.
Luis Co had a great start to his state tournament, winning both his matches on Thursday. That put Co in the semifinals Friday night against number one ranked wrestler Tristan Burbach, 46-0, of Central City.
Co couldn’t find a way to score in the match, losing a close 0-3 decision and dropping into the medal rounds on Saturday morning.
After losing a 5-7 decision to eventual third place finisher Mavrick Hagemann, 46-4 of Elkhorn Valley, in the first round, Co came back with a 12-6 win over Kyler Vincent of Gordon-Rushville to win the fifth place medal.
Senior Brooke Schilke, 29-11,  opened her tournament with a win by pin over Ashaya Steele,  21-8, of Crete in 5:15.
In the quarterfinal match, Schilke was pinned by eventual runner-up Kristen Schellenberg, 27-3, of Scribner-Snyder in 2:00.
Schilke bounced back with a pin in the second round of consolations before losing in the heartbreak round to fourth place finisher Piper Zatechka, 42-7, of Omaha Westside by a score of 2-4.
Sophomore Hayley Rusher fell victim to the quick slap of a pin as she rolled over across her back near the end of the first period against Carly Wemhoff of Schuyler.
Rusher came back with a 0:32 second pin in the first round of consolations but fell to Kennedy Penne of Elkhorn Valley, 1-5, to finish her tournament.
Westyn Mendenhall, 30-15,  had a rough start Thursday, falling to third place finisher Bricen Wilkie, 44-5, of Malcolm by major decision 4-15.
Mendenhall came back to win his first round consolation match before getting knocked out of the tourney by Dakota Baum, 39-14 of Broken Bow with a 4-10 loss.
Zach Tarin did not fare well in the draw of the brackets. Number one ranked JT Brands of Oakland-Craig lost his first match of the year at districts, putting him in third place and matching him against second place finisher Zach Tarin.
Tarin took the match to double overtime, but was unable to score on his chance to escape, losing the match 1-2. Brands ended the tourney in sixth place after getting injured in his final matches.
Tarin faced Mason Planer, 40-13, of Battle Creek in the first round of consolations, losing another heartbreaker in sudden victory 1-3 to end his tournament. Planer went on to finish in fourth place.
Chase County placed 11th in Class C team scoring with 57 points. Battle Creek won Class C with 127 points.
Konner McCrumb of Wauneta-Palisade made the state tournament with a fourth place finish at the D4 Districts in the  120 pound division.
McCrumb, 18-21, lost his opening match to Treu Atkins, 29-7, of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller by pin in 0:26.
In the first round of consolations, McCrumb pinned Dylan  Furstenau, 31-22, of Neligh-Oakdale in 1:13.
McCrumb lost to Hudson Urkoski, 37-11, in the second round of consolations by pin in 2:37 to finish his tournament.
Perkins County sent two wrestlers to state with Juan Perez winning a fourth place medal at 285 and Mason Toner going 0-2 at 144 pounds.
