In his second match of the tournament, Konnor McCrumb, 18-21, scored a pin over Dylan Furstenau, 31-22, of Neligh-Oakdale in just 1:13 to advance to the second round of consolations.

McCrumb gets win at state

Nothing comes easy at the NSAA Wrestling State Championships. That can be especially true for those stepping on the mat for the first time in Omaha.
Wauneta-Palisade Head Coach Shad Wiese said sophomore wrestler Konner McCrumb was a little intimidated for his first match at this year’s state championships.
“Konner was in the CHIbuilding for the first time in his life and couldn’t believe how big it actually was. We knew going down his first match was going to be extremely difficult and it was with all the nerves and a very good wrestler to go against,” Wiese said.
McCrumb’s first match of the tournament came Thursday morning against eventual fourth-place finisher Treu Atkins (29-7) of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller.
McCrumb went down in a quick match, but was ready to go when he returned to the mat Friday. McCrumb used an early second period pin to beat Dylan Furstenau (31-22) of Neligh-Oakdale.
After trailing 0-2 following a takedown by Furstenau, McCrumb got an escape. Despite choosing to start period two down, McCrumb only took 13 seconds to get the pin.
Wiese said McCrumb bounced back very well for his second match and got the win early in the second period.
“Getting a first win at state on your first trip when you’re the underdog in the tournament is a very big momentum burst,” Wiese added.
Another medalist lay in his path and McCrumb’s tournament came to an end at the hands of fifth-place finisher Hudson Urkoski (37-11) of High Plains Community) by a second period pin.
Wiese said McCrumb is already talking about summer camps and next season.
“He’s looking to improve on this and keep getting better.”
