Longhorns take wins over Yuma, NP St. Pat’s

The Chase County girls’ basketball team moved up one spot to 10th in the Class C1 point standings last week with wins  over Yuma, Colorado and North Platte St. Pat’s.
The Longhorns made the trip to Yuma Feb. 1.
CCS gave up an early layup to the Indians, but otherwise dominated the quarter.
CCS increased its 19-2 lead to 26-5 before a 3:30 dry spell let Yuma catch up to 28-12.
Chase County had doubled up on Yuma, 39-19, by midway through the third quarter. A Jerzee Milner three pointer at the buzzer gave CCS a 45-25 lead going into the fourth.
CCS cruised in the fourth quarter to take the 55-29 win.
Bryn McNair scored 22 for the Longhorns and Jordan Jablonski was also in double figures with 10 points.
McNair pulled down 19 rebounds in the game. Lucy Spady also finished with double figure rebounds, totalling 10.
CCS dominated in the paint, pulling down 23 offensive rebounds and scoring 30 points in the paint.
Longhorns’ Head Coach Randy Longoria said his team worked hard, especially on defense, to do the little things well.
Longoria said CCS has had a strong defensive year and continues to get better at it.
That work showed Friday at NPSP.
CCS fell to St. Pat’s 35-36 in the SPVA semifinal game Feb. 4, but got some revenge when it traveled to the Irish’s home court.
The Longhorns shut St. Pat’s down in the first quarter, holding the Irish to four points on two field goals. On the offensive end, McNair score five points in the quarter and was joined in the scoring column by Milner, Jablonski and Morgan Peterson.
Neither team showed much fire power in the second quarter. McNair scored four points and Milner added a basket for all of Chase County’s points. CCS only allowed eight points to the Irish and took a 17-12 lead into halftime.
The Longhorns put St. Pat’s to bed in the third quarter. McNair hit two three pointers and scored 10 points in the quarter. Baskets by Spady, Peterson and Milner gave CCS extra cushion as the Longhorns headed into the fourth quarter leading 39-17.
Jablonski’s three pointer got CCS off on the right foot in the final quarter. Milner and McNair added baskets, but as the Irish cut into Chase County’s lead, the Longhorns made 6-11 free throws to seal the 46-31 win.
Longoria said CCS defended just as well as it did in the teams’ first game, but was better with their offensive sets and movement which led to more points.
McNair scored 22 points to lead CCS.
Up next
The Longhorns’ game against Hitchcock County (7-13) Tuesday was the last that will count towards their points standings.
Saturday CCS will be at Gering (10-9).
Chadron currently leads the subdistrict and will play two games after the cutoff date for the final point standings. Even with a win over the Falcons Tuesday, CCS will likely not be able to jump past Chadron in the standings.
The play-in game for the subdistrict will be Monday, with games to follow Tuesday and Thursday.
