Longhorns handle competition at Sutherland

Not even Mother Nature could stop the Chase County boys track team at Saturday’s Sutherland Invite.
Weather conditions were less than ideal for the meet, but the Longhorns battled through the cold and wind.
Head Coach Carl Zuege said he thought that given the windy and cold conditions, CCS competed pretty well.
“We had some really good marks in spite of the weather, and I thought the team maintained pretty good focus despite the weather,” he added.
Chase County won three individual events and two relays.
Easton Fries continued his strong season, winning the 200 and 400-meter dashes. In the 110-meter hurdle prelims Fries ran the third fastest time in school history, 14.79, and set the meet record. The junior battled cramps in the finals and finished second.
Mason Wallin won the pole vault. Zuege said Wallin’s vault of 13’0” was exciting.
Zuege thought the 1,600-meter relay, made up of Jonathan Sosa, Tristan Jablonski, Steven Murray and Easton Fries, ran a really nice race. The group won by nearly seven seconds.
The 3,200-meter relay, Luis Co, Jablonski, Murray and Zach Herbert, won by 15 seconds.
It wasn’t a perfect day by Zuege’s standards.
“I would say that all-in-all we left some points out there in a few places, but it was a good team performance,” he said.
Tuesday was the Chase County Invite.
Zuege likes having everyone competing at the JV/varsity meet.
“It is always exciting to have everyone competing,” he said.
With only six teams competing, CCS used a little different format to get more athletes in events.
“We always get a very good crowd to come watch the kids compete, and it is awesome when our grade school classes come out and cheer for the Longhorns,” Zuege said.
The enthusiasm helped the Longhorns cleaned house Tuesday at their home meet. Results will be available in next week’s Republican.
Up next
Saturday CCS will head to Hershey for the Mike Troxel Invite.
Zuege said it will be a really good preview of the SPVA meet as most of the teams will be there, and the conference meet will be in Hershey this year next Friday.
With Arthur County, Hershey, Perkins County, St. Pat’s and Sutherland on the docket, Zuege expects strong competition from the Irish, which he hopes will build into good momentum for SPVA.
The Longhorn girls and boys JV will take part in the McCook JV Invite Monday.
“That meet gives us the opportunity to get some of our younger guys into events with other JV athletes, and allows us to run some relays with our younger guys, which they don’t always get to do,” Zuege said.
