Longhorns fall to ranked teams

The Chase County girls basketball team entered the SPVA tournament as the fifth seed after a loss to Southern Valley last Tuesday.
Ranked No. 8 in Class C2, Southern Valley’s Ann Bose did plenty of damage in the first half. Bose scored 15 of Southern Valley’s 24 point.
The Eagles box and one did a number on Chase County’s offense, holding the Longhorns to just 12 first half points.
Two three pointers by Liz Reeves helped light a fire under the CCS offense in the third quarter and trim its deficit from 12 points to six.
Trailing 30-36 entering the fourth quarter, the Longhorns only made two field goals as time ran down. Both were 3s by Olivia Spady to add to her team high total of 13 points.
CCS only shot two free throws in the game, a 38-50 loss.
Chase County got back in its groove with a 59-20 drubbing of Perkins County Thursday.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 24-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The lead grew as Perkins County didn’t score for the first four minutes of the second quarter.
CCS was able to clear its bench in the second half, getting 14 players in the game.
The Longhorns outscored PCS 28-8 in points off turnovers and 14-1 in second-chance points.
Bryn McNair scored 20 points to lead nine scorers for CCS.
The Longhorns traveled to Class C1 No. 4 Gothenburg Friday and lost 23-43.
The Swedes box and one stymied the CCS offense throughout the night. CCS never broke double-digit scoring in any quarter. Chase County hung around in the first quarter, but couldn’t keep up when Gothenburg hit three 3s in the second quarter.
McNair scored a team high 13 points.
