Longhorns cruise to team titles at home, Hershey

The Chase County boys’ track team defended its home turf last week and continued its streak of team titles with wins at its CCS Invite and the Mike Troxell Invite in Hershey.
Both meets allowed varsity and JV competitors which gave coaches a chance to see a lot of athletes in action.
Head Coach Carl Zuege said everyone has more fun when everyone on the team gets to compete, especially at their home meet Tuesday.
Zuege liked that Activities Director Troy Hauxwell made the change at the CCS Invite to allow each school 10 entries in each event.
“I didn’t realize how much everyone would like it. We got great feedback from other teams, and I think it is a format we will stick with. More kids get to compete in more events—which is a win for everyone,” Zuege said.
The Longhorns claimed wins by Thomas Reeves in the 200-meter dash, Haven Hauxwell in the 1,600 and 3,200, Easton Fries in both hurdle races, Carter Leibbrandt in the pole vault and Kade Anderson in the triple jump.
All three relays won, as well.
Zuege said the 4x400 relay, Jonathan Sosa, Tristan Jablonski, Steven Murray and Fries, really stepped up in a big way, posting a time that right now leads Class C by a little over three seconds.
“They still have some work to do, as I think it will take another drop of two to three seconds to win in Omaha,” he added.
Longhorn hurdlers had four in the finals of each race, Fries, Jensen Olsen, Anderson and Tyler O’Neil.
“I thought our mid and long distance guys competed very well, too,” Zuege said. Among those runners were Brayan Reyes, Andrew Wiest, Peyton Dubas, Krayton Paisley, Navy Smith and Michael McBride.
There were PRs aplenty through the home meet, which Zuege credits to several factors.
“The weather certainly helped things, and then I think when guys start posting great times and marks early, it kind of just sets the tone for the day. I thought our 4x800 guys stepped on the track and got things started, and we saw a lot of really good performances from that point on. Our field events were pretty solid all day, as well,” Zuege said.
After a relatively mild weather day Tuesday, temperatures turned chilly once more Saturday at Hershey and the wind kicked back up.

“Our kids have consistently gone out and competed at a high level regardless of the conditions—that is something I have been very happy with this season,” Zuege said.
Reeves repeated Tuesday’s result and placed first in the 200.
Zach Herbert and Luis Co went 1-2 in the 800, while Fries and Olsen swept the top two spots in the 110-meter hurdles. Fries also won the 300-meter hurdles.
Mason Wallin edged out Leibbrandt for the pole vault win. Zuege said the pair had an exceptional day despite the weather conditions.
Once more, CCS swept the relays.
“I thought our throwers from top to bottom had a really nice day Saturday, and we continued to see improvement on the track, as well,” Zuege said.
The Longhorns had six finish in the top 10 of the discus with four PRs and five shot putters in the top 10.
Up next
After conversations between activities directors, the SPVA meet will stay on Friday.
Zuege said coaches have a few personnel changes in mind, but nothing too big.
That all hinges, however, on having a fully healthy team available, especially Murray and Dawson Mollendor.
“Provided that we get Dawson and Stephen back, we should be back to a fairly normal look on our relays. We will ask quite a bit from guys like Easton Fries, Jonathan Sosa and Thomas Reeves—all guys who are very versatile and we need to get them a full schedule in order to maximize our points,” Zuege said.
CCS will return to Hershey for the SPVA meet.
The Best of the Midwest will be Tuesday in Sutherland.
