Longhorns can’t beat Mother Nature, get win over Tigers

Another week, another change of schedule for the Chase County girls’ basketball team.
Winter weather moving through last week forced the Longhorns to forfeit their first game of Sidney Holiday Tournament.
With the forfeit to Gordon-Rushville, CCS played Mitchell, which lost 19-61 to Sidney Thursday, in the consolation game Friday.
After snow days and the Christmas break, the first quarter was a close one. CCS trailed 7-8 with less than two minutes left to go in the first quarter. The Longhorns’ middle five points of the quarter were free throws, but Chase County took an 11-9 lead on an Olivia Spady put-back at the quarter’s buzzer.
Joee Clevenger hit a three pointer on the Longhorns’ first possession of the second quarter. The Tigers wouldn’t let CCS pull away. With only one other field goal in the quarter, Chase County relied on free throws to hang on to the lead. CCS made 4-7 and took a 20-16 lead into halftime.
The Longhorns’ defense put Mitchell to bed in the third quarter when CCS held the Tigers to four points. Bryn McNair broke free from the Tigers’ box-and-one defense and scored eight points, while Liz Reeves and Spady made three pointers. Heading into the fourth quarter, Chase County held a 36-20 advantage.
With the 16-point lead, CCS was able to cruise in the final stanza. B. McNair added six more points on her way to 22 in the game. Clevenger and Landree McNair added baskets to match Spady with seven points in the game.
