Longhorn wrestling place third at MV

The Chase County wrestling team faced some very good competition last week as it prepares for upcoming postseason.
Chase County faced Class D No. 9 Hitchcock County and No. 11 Sutherland Thursday at Hitchcock County.
CCS kicked off the duals against Sutherland. The Sailors, last year’s Class D State Duals Champions, were announced as the fourth seed in this year’s state duals.
Head Coach Matt Vlasin said the Longhorns came out flat and Chase County lost the match 30-45.
Thomas Reeves, 182 lbs. and Westyn Mendenhall, 145 lbs. both won matches to go with three Sutherland forfeits.
The Longhorns beat Hitchcock County 31-30 thanks to a late pin by Reeves.
CCS rearranged its line up to face the Falcons, but after a few matches didn’t go Chase County’s way, Vlasin said he thought CCS was out of luck in the team score.
But Reeves beat Class D No. 3 Kolyn Gaston, in what could have been Gaston’s 100th career win, with a late pin to give CCS the points it need for the team win.
Hitchcock County’s Keegan Shuler, ranked second in Class D, bumped up from 195 lbs. to 220 lbs. to take on Jaret Peterson. Peterson outlasted Shuler for a 3-1 win.
Both wrestlers are looking for tough matches to prepare them for state, Vlasin said.
Earning wins were Jonathan Sosa, 132 lbs.; Scott Hoover, 138 lbs.; Luis Co, 145 lbs.; Mollendor, 170 lbs.; and Mendenhall.
Friday was the Medicine Valley Duals in Curtis.
CCS finished third in the team race behind Sutherland and Sedgwick County/Fleming, Colorado.
Tyler O’Neil, 152 lbs., won his seven-man bracket. O’Neil was the only wrestler in his bracket to get a bye and won both his matches. Vlasin is hopeful the tournament win will build O’Neil’s confidence going into conference and districts. Picking up wins over opponents with winning records will also help O’Neil’s seeding at districts, Vlasin said.
Reeves had fans on the edges of their seats for the championship match at 182 lbs. Going up against Sutherland Conner Bryner, ranked 10th in Class D, Reeves got an extremely late takedown to earn a 2-1 win.
Peterson also used a late takedown to break a 1-1 tie against Class No. 3 Luke Pawloski of Pleasanton and win the 220 lbs. first place match. Vlasin said Pawloski wrestles very defensively and it was good for Peterson to see that style. Broken Bow’s Cal Wells, the only wrestler to beat Peterson this season, uses the same strategy, so the Pawloski match was good preparation for a possible state match.
Co won three straight matches to advance to the championship match. Seconds into the match, Sutherland’s Cauy Kohl, ranked third in Class D, hit Co in the forehead with his thumb and dislocated it. Vlasin said CCS coaches gave Sutherland extra time to put Kohl’s thumb back in place and Co was timid when the match resumed. Co lost the 138 lbs. match 3-9.
Jonathan Sosa placed third at 132 lbs. Vlasin said Sosa is a great athlete and coaches are looking for more consistency from him. Sosa lost his second round match but won out for the rest of the day.
Mendenhall placed third at 145 lbs., his only loss coming to Sutherland’s Kason Bruns who Mendenhall had pinned the night before.
Dawson Mollendor lost second match of the day and battled back through the 170 lbs. bracket to reach the third place match. But with five matches under his belt for the day, Mollendor had to forfeit his final match.

CCS is headed to Bridgeport Thursday for the WTC/SPVA/MAC/PAC tournaments.
