Zach Tarin won a 2-1 decision over Mitchell’s Michael Morgan at the WTC/SPVA/MAC/PAC meet.

Longhorn wrestlers runners up at SPVA meet

Zach Tarin’s first place finish at 195 lbs. helped the Chase County wrestlers to a runner up finish at last Thursday’s SPVA meet.
CCS faced teams from conferences across the Panhandle at the meet.
Tarin beat Mitchell’s Michael Morgan in the finals by a 2-1 score, the same score he earned in the semifinals against Sutherland’s Eric Halsted.
The final’s match against Morgan was a rematch from the Chase County Invite where Morgan came out on top, so CCS Head Coach Matt Vlasin said Tarin’s win at Bridgeport could be considered an upset.
Jaret Peterson finished second at 220 lbs. Peterson picked  up first period pins in his first two matches before facing Sutherland’s Gavin White (30-3) in the finals. Peterson picked up the win last week at Curtis, but White came out on top at Bridgeport in a 9-3 decision.
Vlasin said White came out much more conservative than he did the week prior. White caught Peterson at the end of the mat twice and took a lead. With the points on his side, White stayed defensive and made Peterson come to him.
Westyn Mendenhall placed third at 132 lbs. Mendenhall won by pin and decision before losing in the semifinals to Tucker Banister (20-8) of Gordon-Rushville. Mendenhall bounced back with a win by major decision in the consolation match.
Vlasin said Mendenhall wrestled tough and the loss to Banister is good experience.
Luis Co was third at 138 lbs. After a quarterfinal win by decision, Co went the distance with Sutherland’s undefeated Jon Peterka, losing 3-11. Co’s day wrapped up with a first period pin in the consolation match.
Vlasin said Co had a phenomenal match against Peterka.
Brice Vitosh was 2-1 at 160 lbs. and placed fifth. Vitosh lost his opening match to Aydan Kaps (29-11) of Sutherland by decision, 4-10, but bounced back to take a 13-8 win in the consolation semis and a 7-6 win in the fifth place match.
Vlasin said Vitosh was trailing in the fifth place match, but with eight seconds left, got an escape and takedown for the win.
Thomas Reeves opened his meet being pinned at the 5:35 mark in the match. Reeves bounced back with a win over Sutherland’s Austin Lee (27-9), 7-1, before falling in the third place match 4-9.
Vlasin said Reeves wrestled well in the third place match, but gave up late back points in the loss.
Cayden White went 1-2, with both losses coming to Mitchell’s Luke Wetherington, who White had also lost to at Broken Bow, and took third at 120 lbs.
Trevin Moreno was 1-2 at 113 lbs., Malachi Christensen was 0-2 at 126 lbs., George Colton was 0-2 at 132 lbs., Tyler O’Neil was 0-2 at 145 lbs., Cody Duffy was 1-2 at 152 lbs. and Cooper Dillan finished 0-2 at 170 lbs.

The road to Omaha won’t be an easy one for many Longhorns, but Vlasin is hopeful CCS can get a handful of wrestlers in the top four at O’Neill.
CCS leaves Thursday and will practice at Ainsworth before spending the night at Atkinson.
The district will begin at 3 p.m. CT Friday. Saturday’s matches will begin at 10 a.m. CT.
Other teams at the meet will be Amherst, Loomis/Bertrand, Arcadia/Loup City, Mitchell, Centura, O’Neill, Ord, Gibbon, Red Cloud/Blue Hill, Gordon-Rushville, Valentine, Hershey, West Holt, Kearney Catholic and Wood River.
The meet will be streamed on oneillhighschool.org. Once at the site, select EEB.
Vlasin said Gordon-Rushville and Valentine wrestlers have been bouncing back and forth between weights, so he’s not sure what to expect this weekend.
