Longhorn varsity, JV golf stay busy with invites

Varsity and junior varsity golfers from Chase County stayed busy last week. All golfers were on the course April 11 for the Chase County Invite at Enders Lake Golf Course.
On Thursday the team split up. The Longhorn JV golfers went to the Bridgeport Invite and the varsity headed to the Medicine Valley Invite in Curtis.
Gavin Wisnieski finished second at the CCS Invite behind last year’s Class D third place medalist Zaybreon Hansen of Perkins County.
The Longhorns had two other golfers finish as medalists, Jaret Manley at fifth and Kaden Vogt at 13th.
Beau Weiss and Harrison Foote led the JV golfers with a nine-hole score of 59.
McDaniel said the varsity had a great day at Arrowhead Meadows in Curtis, pointing out three of CCS golfers shot their lowest of the season, Gavin Wisnieski, 87; Matthew Murray, 98; and Cole Pankonin, 117.
Wisnieski finished eighth overall, only seven strokes off the lead.
Only four strokes separated second place and eighth, including ties for fourth, fifth and sixth, as well as Wisnieski tying for seventh and eighth.
Those ties were broken by a card runoff.
Chase County was sixth as a team, which McDaniel credited to the hard work of all five golfers on the course. Also competing were Vogt and Manley.
“There were 14 teams which is one of our larger meets and there were a lot of teams there that we do not normally see,” McDaniel said.
At Bridgeport, the course continued its historic trend of being difficult for the Longhorns.
“Bridgeport is an interesting course that has sometimes posed problems for our golfers in the past and this was some of the JV golfers’ first time playing 18 holes,” McDaniel said.
That said, McDaniel thought the team did pretty well.
Weiss had the best finish of all the Longhorns, shooting 117.
“There were 12 teams there and all the golfers who placed shot below a 90 which is not common. Normally you have a few golfers who shoot in the mid-90s and still place,” McDaniel said.
Parker Terryberry, Carter Kuenning, Peyton Norman and Foote competed for CCS.
McDaniel said she’s proud of what all 12 of her golfers have done so far this year.
“We continue to see improvement as coaches and a positive attitude which is very important in this sport,” she said.
More so, McDaniel said a parent from another team at Bridgeport called and recognized Weiss for his kindness and compassion toward her son who has some special needs.
“She told us that she really appreciated how he interacted with her son and that we’re doing great things here in Chase County,” McDaniel said.
