Longhorn boys return to top of Ed Moore Invite

After a three-year break, the Chase County boys’ track team is back on top of the Ed Moore Invite in Ogallala.
The Longhorns finished seven points ahead of runner up Gothenburg, 119-112.
CCS won the meet in 2017,  2018 and 2019. After the 2020 season was called off, CCS had a third place finish in 2021 and was sixth in 2022.
Head Coach Carl Zuege said it was a great win for the team against a field loaded with Class B talent.
“Every one of the kids who competed for us had a role in the team win. I was incredibly pleased with the effort that I saw from our kids all day long,” Zuege said.
“When you win a meet by only seven points, you can point to so many little things that ultimately wind up making the difference for the team,” he continued.
The Longhorns’ only first place finish was by sophomore Thomas Reeves in the 200-meter dash.
“That is a clear indication that our depth was the difference,” Zuege said.
Easton Fries was second in the 110-meter high hurdles behind last year’s Class B state champion Xander Provance of Chadron.
Fries took second in the 400-meter dash with the third best time in school history and quickly followed it up with a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. His time in that race is the best so far in Class C.
Zuege said Fries really set the tone for the Longhorns.
Kade Anderson was hitting on all cylinders, as well. Anderson was second in the triple jump and fifth in both hurdle races on his way to personal records in each event. He’s now close to the top of the heap in Class C triple jump.
Zuege had a long list of athletes to praise, including Jaret Peterson and Cooper Dillan in shot put and discus, pole vaulters Carter Leibbrandt and Mason Wallin and sprinter Dawson Mollendor.
Zuege went on to highlight Haven Hauxwell in the distance races, James McArthur in the jumps and Tristan Jablonski and Zach Herbert in the middle distances.
Zuege also noted great relay performance from all CCS runners, especially Stephen Murray and Jonathan Sosa.
“I’m likely forgetting someone, but as I said we had a bunch of guys who were critical in winning the meet,” Zuege said.
Up next
Zuege is hopeful the weather will hold out so CCS can have a challenging week of practices as it prepares to head to Cambridge Thursday for the Don Stine Invite.
The Longhorns will see a variety of different sized schools, both JV and varsity.
“We will see some different schools, and even though we may not see teams quite as deep as those in Ogallala, there will be plenty of great athletes there to challenge us,” Zuege said, adding he is looking forward to having all of his athletes involved in events.     That may mean lighter loads for upper classmen, but worth it to get everyone competing.
After Easter break, CCS will be at the Sutherland Invite April 14, then host the Chase County Invite April 18.
