Jaret Peterson placed fourth at the NHSCA High School Nationals over the weekend with coach Josh Geary.

Jeret Peterson All American at Virginia wrestling tournament

High school wrestling season may have ended in February, but area wrestlers still have options to hone their skills.
Chase County School’s senior Jaret Peterson has been hard at work since his state championship in February.
Peterson has continued to train with CCS Assistant Coach Josh Geary and the pair traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia last weekend for the National High School Coaches Association High School Nationals.
Bruce Peterson, Jaret’s dad, said NHSCA is a widely known national tournament and something Jaret has always wanted to do to see how he matched up against some of the best.
Divisions included girls, middle school, freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.
Peterson dropped down from 215 lbs. during the high school season to 195 lbs. for the tournament. At Virginia Beach he faced many seniors like himself that plan to wrestle in college. Peterson will join the Augustana College wrestling team in South Dakota this fall.
Peterson and Geary, who have trained together in the past, decided to sign up for the NHSCA tournament soon after the Nebraska School Activities Association state tournament in February. They trained together every day to help Peterson reach his weight goal and stay in shape.
Peterson and Geary flew out from Denver late last Wednesday for Norfolk, Virginia.
Weigh ins were Thursday afternoon before double-elimination matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Peterson started off the tournament with a pin of Pat Baer of South Carolina. In the second round, he added another pin, this one over Hampton Blackwell from North Carolina. That win was followed by a 5-0 decision over Alex Hoy of Maryland.
Saturday, Peterson suffered his first loss, a late-round pin to Isaac Sheeren of Texas. Sheeren finished fifth in the tournament.
With three wins, a 5-0 decision over Michael Toppan of Massachusetts, an 9-0 major decision over Kaleb Wright of New Jersey, the tournament’s eighth-place finisher, and an 8-0 major decision over Mishael Mauck of Oregon who finished sixth, Peterson moved on to Sunday where he lost the consolation match 4-6 to Coy Raines of New York.
The top eight in each bracket were declared All-Americans.
After matches ended, Peterson and Geary hopped back on a plane and were back in Denver late Sunday. Peterson was in Cambridge for the Longhorns’ track meet Monday.
Bruce Peterson left the door open to more tournaments before his son’s college career begins, saying they will wait and see.
