Heartbreak continues for WP boys

Close, but not quite has been the theme of the Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team in its last three games.
The Broncos lost by one to Sutherland Feb. 5, then by four to Rawlins County, Kansas Feb. 9. WP’s week wrapped up with a loss to Maywood/Hayes Center Friday.
Braxton McKinney scored WP’s first five points against Rawlins County (4-11), but picked up two fouls in two minutes and headed to the bench.
After a basket by Aidan Kennicutt, Ruel Malcolm scored five straight points and kept the Broncos with in one point, 12-13, at the end of the first quarter.
The Buffaloes pulled away in the second quarter. McKinney returned to the game with a three pointer, but it was WP’s only field goal of the quarter. The Broncos made four free throws and trailed Rawlins County 19-28.
WP’s defense got it back in the game in the third quarter. The Broncos held Rawlins County to five points, while Grant Walker, Kennicutt and Malcolm scored for WP, narrowing the deficit to 27-33.
Behind a basket by McKinney and two free throws from Kennicutt, WP pulled to within  two points with 6:28 left in the game. Following a Buffaloes’ basket, McKinney scored four straight points to tie the game at 35. A layup by the senior gave the Broncos the lead, but WP finished the game being outscored 2-5 in the 39-43 loss.
The Broncos played a competitive first half when Maywood/Hayes came to town Friday.
