Girls b-ball beats Holyoke, loses heartbreaker to Hershey

The girls split games last week, picking up a 45-36 win over Holyoke Colorado and losing in overtime 47-48 to Hershey.
On Thursday, Jan. 25, the Longhorns traveled to Holyoke and came home with a hard fought win.
Holyoke bettered CCS in the first period 8-9, but the second quarter was the big difference in the game. The Longhorns shut down the scoring of the Dragons, holding them to just four points, while putting up 13 to lead at the half 21-13.
CCS was able to out-score Holyoke 16-4 on transition points and outscored the Dragons on points off turnovers 14-9.
The Dragons came out after halftime and outscored CCS 10-13, cutting the lead to just five. There was no panic in the Longhorns as they settled into a rhythem in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dragons by four and taking the 45-36 win.
Karlie Anderson led CCS in scoring with 15, while Landree McNair and Olivia Spady each added 11. Peyton Owens led the rebounding with 6 while Abby Spicer was credited with 4 steals.
Ellie Kleve led the Dragon scoring with 15 and Audrey Talavera added 13.
On Saturday, the Longhorns welcomed Hershey to town. Hershey finished one spot ahead of the Longhorns in the SPVA tournament the previous week, losing to Bridgeport in the finals 27-68.
It was a battle with both teams running a lot of full court pressure for most of the game.
Both teams had trouble scoring points in the first quarter, with each team putting up just five.
Hershey took the lead into the half by two, 17-19. The Longhorns started breaking Hershey’s full court pressure for a couple easy buckets in the third and cut the lead to one point.
Karlie Anderson got the hot hand in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of her 11 points, helping the Horns tie the ballgame and take it to overtime.
Unfortunately the Longhorns lost Abby Spicer and Landree McNair towards the end of regulation when they fouled out. Peyton Jones, Hershey’s top scorer also fouled out, but not until deep into overtime.
Both teams traded scores and it came down to the Longhorns being down three points with 12.7 seconds on the clock and inbounding the ball under the Hershey basket.
The Horns got the ball to Peyton Owens who drove the lane for a layup, but Hershey backed off as to not foul. The layup was good but left the Horns trailing by one with just 1.9 seconds on the clock.
Hershey was able to get the ball in and time ran out on the Horns, losing the 47-48 contest.
Landree McNair led the Horns with her double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds and 5 steals, followed closely by Karlie Anderson with 11 points.
Peyton Jones led the Panthers with 16.
