Four Longhorns in top five at Southern Valley

    The Chase County wrestling team started off well at Friday’s Southern Valley Invite, but struggled as the meet dragged on until late in the evening.
    Head Coach Matt Vlasin said the first rounds went well, but sitting around for much of the day caught up with the Longhorns around the fourth round.
    A little bit of illness also kept CCS from wrestling at its best.
    Jaret Peterson finished third at 220 lbs. Vlasin said 220 was the toughest weight class at the invite and it was fun to watch that group wrestle all day long. Sixteen wrestled at the weight.
    Thomas Reeves looked good at 182 lbs., Vlasin said, and placed third.
    Brice Vitosh didn’t have his first match until around 3 p.m. Even though the senior went 4-1 at 160 lbs., he placed fifth, thanks to an untimely loss.
    “It all depends on when you lose. Brice wrestled tough all day,” Vlasin said.
    The 18-man, 160 lb. weight class was divided into eight pools. After one pool match, Vitosh was seeded into a bracket against the tournament’s top seed.
    After that first round loss, Vitosh won his next three matches.
    Westyn Mendenhall placed fourth in the 14 man 138 lb. weight class. Vlasin said Mendenhall’s last two opponents were tough, but the freshman wrestled well despite not feeling well.
    Vlasin also complimented Trevin Moreno for stepping into the varsity role at 113 lbs. while Arturo Misceles is out with an injury.
    “He gave guys good matches,” Vlasin said.
    Also placing in the top 10 of their weight were Cayden White, sixth at 120 lbs; Malachi Christensen, seventh at 126 lbs; Luis Co, seventh at 145 lbs; Cody Duffy, seventh at 152 lbs; and Zach Tarin, eighth at 220 lbs.
    Overall, the Longhorns finished ninth out of 21 teams. Sutherland ran away with the team race, winning by 102 points.
JV at Hershey
    Five Longhorn wrestlers took part in the Hershey JV Tournament Dec. 9
    Jonathan Sosa won the 132 lb. bracket and Moreno was second at 113 lbs.
    Alonso Martinez and George Colton placed third at 152 and 132 lbs., respectively. Bailey Cook was fifth in the 113 lb. bracket.
Up next
    The Longhorns will be at the Bridgeport/Sidney Invite Saturday in Bridgeport.
    Chase County’s next meet will be after New Year’s when CCS will be at the Garden County Invite Jan. 8.
