Westyn Mendenhall won an 8-2 decision over Mitchell’s Santiago Castillo.

Chase County to host dual Friday, invite Saturday

The day didn’t go quite the way the Chase County wrestling team wanted it to, but the Longhorns still got in their first action of the new year.
CCS Head Coach Matt Vlasin said 85% of his team came back from the holiday break in phenomenal shape.
CCS was supposed to have five duals in Ogallala Saturday. After Wray, Colorado withdrew from the meet, coaches were told to arrange a fifth dual with another team. While CCS was waiting for the final scheduled duals to wrap up before making plans, the other teams paired up before then or left early. That left only Sidney, a team the Longhorns had already wrestled Saturday, available so CCS choose not to have a final dual.
Chase County started off the day with a 31-48 loss to Mitchell and 30-36 loss to Sidney in their pool.
Vlasin said the Longhorns started off the day with great intensity against Mitchell, but didn’t come out with the same drive against Sidney.
After re-seeding, CCS lost to Mullen 33-36 before beating Limon, Colorado 42-28.
Vlasin said the Longhorns had to make a few adjustments Saturday as one wrestler missed weight, one had ringworm and another was sick. Destry Russell stepped up at 138 lbs., but a spot was left open at 132 lbs.
The outcomes of matches – whether they ended in pins, decisions or technical falls – made a big difference in the duals, Vlasin said.
“It’s nice to be in the hunt in the duals, but it sucks to be short a couple points,” Vlasin said.
Hitting the mat for the first time this season was Cooper Dillan, 160 lbs, and Malachi Christensen, 126 and 132 lbs. Dillan went 3-1 and Christensen won both his matches.
“It’s huge having them back,” Vlasin said.
Jaret Peterson, still ranked second in Class C, bounced between 220 and 285 lbs. depending on the opponent. Peterson had his work cut out for him in his heavyweight matches, claiming a third-period pin against Sidney and beating Class D No. 1 Isaac Welch of Mullen in extra time.
Westyn Mendenhall  won all three of his matches, while Dawson Mollendor and Thomas Reeves each won two matches.
Vlasin said Mendenhall got in a bad spot in his first match, but after Mendenhall escaped, he “went to town on the kid” and took an 8-2 win.
