Chase County girls flash potential at early meet

There were some surprises in the results of the Chase County girls track team at the Perkins County Preseason Triangular and they show the potential of this year’s team.
Nice weather certainly didn’t hurt Chase County’s cause. Head Coach Troy Hauxwell said Potter-Dix had four inches of snow on the ground and the team was surprised there wasn’t any fresh snow in Grant.
The Longhorns won all but two events against the Plainsmen and Potter-Dix.
The day didn’t go quite as expected, leading coaches to make some late lineup changes to make sure everyone stayed healthy heading into the upcoming week.
Senior Ali McNair won the 100-meter dash with a personal best and pole vault.
Senior Bryn McNair won the high jump and 800-meter run.
Sophomore Peyton Owens won the 300-meter hurdles and triple jump.
Senior Kaylie Lotspeich won the discus, junior Ella Colson won the 200-meter dash, sophomores Landree McNair placed first in the 1,600-meter run and Adelle Eskew won the long jump, while freshman Riley Rusher won the 400-meter dash.
The Longhorns also won each of the relays, including the weightman’s relay.
Hauxwell said this year’s team probably doesn’t have the sprinters its had in the past for relays and open races, but his team is getting stronger.
Still, Hauxwell feels the pieces of the puzzle are there, coaches need to figure out which piece goes where.
    “They’ve got promise,” he said.
He also expects his young distance runners to score points and keep battling.
Looking over other results, Hauxwell pointed out five runners under 30 seconds in the 200-meter dash, four discus results over 90 feet and three triple jumpers over 31 feet at last Thursday’s meet.
