Chase County girls assert dominance at SPVA track

    Just when SPVA teams thought they’d spotted a weakness with the Chase County girls track team, the Longhorns sent a clear message that they are dominant team in the conference.
    With the conference title firmly in hand, CCS sent a new look 1,600-meter relay onto the track, freshman Dylan and Ashlyn Heermann and junior Hailey Markee with 4x400 regular sophomore Peyton Owens.
    Teams were licking there lips for a chance to take the relay crown from Chase County, but the quartet finished five seconds ahead of runner up Perkins County with the Longhorns’ third fastest 1,600 relay time of the year.
    Head Coach Troy Hauxwell said it was the cherry on top of the day.
    Seeing the way the team rallied around and celebrated with the relay team members made Hauxwell proud to be the team’s coach.
    CCS just missed the 200 point mark, beating runner up North Platte St. Pat’s 196-88.
    First place finishes came from Bryn McNair in the 800 and high jump. McNair set a new meet record, a moved to the top of the Class C leader board, with a jump of 5’7”. The previous record of 5’6” was set in 2015 by Chase County’s Katelyn Wheeler.
    Ali McNair cleared 8’7” to win pole vault.
    The Longhorns’ relay teams won all three races.
    Running the 400-meter relay were Hayley Rusher, Ella Colson, Ali McNair and Riley Rusher. In the 100-meter dash, Colson was third, H. Rusher fifth and A. McNair seventh. Chase County also had three runners in the finals of the 200, R. Rusher, H. Rusher and A. McNair.
    Making up the 3,200-meter relay was Olivia Spady, Miranda Spady, Landree McNair and A. Heermann.
    Plenty of second place finishes could be found as well, R. Rusher in the 400; L. McNair in the 1,600; Owens in the 300-meter hurdles, Kaylie Lotspeich in the shot put and Katelyn Stamm in the triple jump.
    Hurdlers Joee Clevenger and Tristan Nordhausen joined Owens with a strong day for Chase County, finishing 3-4-5 in the 100 hurdles and 2-3-4 in the 300 hurdles.
Up next
    The Longhorns took a good group to the Best of the Midwest Tuesday in Sutherland. Results will be available in next week’s Republican.
    Friday will be the annual Dundy County Stratton Twilight in Benkelman.
    The season’s final regular season meet will begin at 12:30 p.m.
    District track will be next Thursday at Perkins County. Girls events in Grant will begin at 10 a.m.
    The meet will have a session of field events followed by a session of running events.
    The second session of field events will begin at 2 p.m. with girls pole vault. Girls discus, pole vault and long jump will begin at 2:15 p.m. along with boys high jump, triple jump and shot put.
    Second session field events will start at 3:45 p.m.
